Trezor.io/Start® — Starting Up Your Device

Quick guide: unbox, set up, secure your recovery seed, and make your first safe transaction.

Quick overview

A Trezor hardware wallet stores your private keys offline and requires physical confirmation on the device to sign transactions. This short guide walks you through the essential steps to start using your device safely: inspecting the package, installing the official software, initializing the device, recording the recovery seed, and completing a small test transaction.

What's in the box

If packaging looks tampered or items are missing, contact the seller or official support before continuing.

Download Trezor Suite (official)

Always download Trezor Suite from the official start page: https://trezor.io/start. Choose the desktop app for daily use or use the web Suite on trusted networks. Verify checksums/signatures if provided — this helps ensure you have a genuine installer.

Setup — step by step (short)

  1. Unbox & inspect. Confirm seals and device condition.
  2. Install Suite. Download and launch the official Trezor Suite application.
  3. Connect device. Use the supplied cable and unlock the device when prompted.
  4. Create new wallet. Choose "Create new" in Suite; the device will display prompts.
  5. Set a PIN. Choose a PIN on the device — do not store it with your seed.
  6. Write your recovery seed. Record each word in order on the supplied card; do not store digitally.
  7. Confirm seed. The device will ask you to verify selected words to ensure correctness.
  8. Add accounts. Use Suite to add Bitcoin, Ethereum or other accounts; install any required apps via Suite if applicable.
  9. Test with a small transfer. Receive a tiny amount and then send it back — practice the verification flow before moving larger amounts.

Essential security tips

Hardware wallets protect keys but safe operation depends on user practices. Follow these rules:

Recovery & backup (brief)

The recovery seed is the ultimate backup. If your device is lost or destroyed you can restore wallets with this seed on a compatible device. Store at least one copy offline and consider geographically separate backups. Test recovery on a spare device with a very small amount if you want to ensure the process works — only after you are confident move larger balances.

Making your first transaction

To receive funds, open Suite → Receive → choose the account and click "Show address" then verify the address on your Trezor device. To send, create a transaction in Suite, confirm amount & fee, then verify details on the device and approve. Always double-check that the address shown on your computer matches the one on your Trezor's screen before confirming.

Quick FAQs

Q: Can I store my seed digitally?
A: No — digital storage (photos, cloud, email, notes) exposes the seed to theft. Keep it offline.

Q: What if I forget my PIN?
A: If you forget your PIN you can restore using the recovery seed on another device and set a new PIN; if you lose the seed too, funds cannot be recovered.

Q: Is firmware safe to update?
A: Yes — install firmware updates via official Suite only. Updates include security fixes; confirm update prompts on the device screen.

Ready to begin?

Visit the official start page and follow the guided setup. Take your time with the recovery seed — it's the most important step.
